Maui is filled with an unmatchable beauty. From it’s lush vegetation, lava fields, and world-class beaches there is always something to see and do. To help you plan your trip, I have composed a list of the best Maui activities for families to enjoy in 2022.
Why You Should Take a Family Vacation to Maui
Maui is home to picturesque beaches, lush rainforests, incredible waterfall hikes, even the world’s largest dormant volcano.
It’s no wonder that Maui is a paradise for people of all ages. The entire family will love hiking over the lava fields, driving down the Hana Highway taking in its unparalleled beauty, discovering a hidden waterfall, snorkeling with the turtles and so much more.
Maui is easily accessible from the US Mainland at just under a 6 hour flight from California! You can also drive the entire island in approximately 9 hours.

Maui Activities for Families – 17 Things You Can’t Miss
#1 Haleakala National Park
Puu Ulaula Summit
One of the most spectacular sites to see in Maui is a sunrise in Haleakala National Park.
Puu Ulaula Summit offers incredible views of the park landscape as well as the stars at night time. You can see spectacular views of the Milky Way, as well as other constellations, from the crater.
If you’re not a morning person or don’t want to deal with the sunrise crowds, sunset is just as beautiful with much fewer people. It’s a win-win no matter what time of day you choose!
Keep in mind, the temperature at the summit can be anywhere between below freezing to 65 degrees F. Make sure you dress accordingly. Even when the temperatures are “warmer” it often feels much colder because the air is damp and there is a wind chill.
It’s also important to note that the drive to the summit will take you around 45 minutes from the park entrance.

Pipiwai Trail
Haleakala National Park isn’t just going to give you spectacular sunrise views. The park is also home to the famous and beautiful Pipiwai Trail.
The Pipiwai Trail is a relatively easy hike that the whole family can enjoy. Located in the Kipahulu District of Haleakala National Park, the hike will take you around 2.5 hours (at the least) to complete and a total of approximately 4 miles.
This hike will take you through a dense bamboo forest, past a giant, ancient banyan tree, to the Seven Sacred Pools (‘Ohe’o) and ending at the incredible 400 foot waterfall known as Waimoku Falls.
If you choose to drive to the Kipahulu District, it will take you around 30 minutes from Hana.
Know Before You Go
To enter the park, it will cost $30 per vehicle, $25 per motorcycle and $15 per pedestrian. This fee will allow unlimited reentry to the park for 3 days so it offers you some flexibility when planning your family’s activities for your itinerary!

Haleakala National Park is located in east Maui, near the town of Hana. The park is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year.
There are two restrooms in the park, both at each of the Visitors Centers. There are NO gas stations in the park, so plan accordingly!
#2 Wai’anapanapa State Park
While visiting the east Maui town of Hana, you absolutely must stop and see the famous black sand beach (Pa’iloa Beach) and its stunning volcanic coastline at Wai’anapanapa State Park. If you start in Paia, you can be in Wai’anapanapa State Park in approximately 2 hours.
While it’s true that the biggest attraction here is the black sand beach, there is also a blowhole, freshwater caves, sea arches, and some incredibly lush greenery that stands out against these glistening waters.
This isn’t a beach that you will want to lay out on, as it’s actually small black pebbles instead of sand. This is also an area where you will want to be very careful if you decide to swim. The waves are often strong and the shoreline will quickly drop off in the water.
The area is also known to have quite a few jellyfish and Portuguese Man O War, so use extreme caution when swimming, especially with children.
Know Before You Go
You MUST have reservations in advance to enter the park. Reservations can be made here up to 14 days in advance but you must make them at least one day before you intend to visit.
The fees are as follows: $5.00 per person, with children under 3 being free. Parking is also a $10 fee. So, if you have a family of 4 (all over the age of 3), you can expect to pay $30 to enter the park.
The park is open from 7am-6pm. When you purchase your reservations, you will need to choose a time slot and you must leave when your time is up.
There are also bathroom and shower facilities in the park.
#3 Visit Maui’s Beaches
No matter what kind of experience you are looking for at the beach, whether it be surfing, snorkeling, or just laying out, Maui has it all.
In fact, Maui has more swimmable beaches than any other Hawaiian island.
West and South Maui, between the areas of Kapalua and Wailea, generally have the best beaches for families as the waters are calmer. However, this does NOT mean that you shouldn’t take the time to explore some of the incredible beaches in East Maui, near Hana, in addition!
Maui has everything from white sandy beaches, to black sand and even red sand!
Napili Bay is one of the best places for the kids to see sea turtles and for snorkeling.
Baby Beach is the best beach in all of Maui for little kids.

#4 Drive the Road to Hana
If you are looking to get off the beaten path in Maui and to take one of the world’s most beautiful journeys, the Road to Hana is for you.
The Road to Hana, or the Hana Highway, is approximately 65 miles long and connects the towns of Kahului and Hana. The drive will take you approximately 6 hours to get to Hana from Kaanapali.
This is a great way to spend some quality family time while taking in some breathtaking scenery. Along the Road to Hana, there are many incredible waterfalls that are just a short hike off the road.
Keep in mind, that this road is VERY twisty with lots of blind corners and cliffs. It is not dangerous if you use extreme caution and do not speed. The road will randomly become one way at several different points and is very narrow. There are many sections that do not have guard rails.
If you are someone who likes fun and random facts here is a good one for you! The Road to Hana has been nicknamed the “Divorce Highway” because of the many arguments had between couples over driving conditions. Hahah!!

#5 Snorkel Black Rock
One of the best snorkel spots in Maui, that is great for all skill levels, is Black Rock on Ka’anapali Beach.
The waters are generally calm and clear with great opportunities to see lots of fish and sea turtles.
You can even cliff dive off Black Rock if you are feeling adventurous!
#6 Whale Watching
Peak whale watching season in Maui is mid January-March but you can see whales any time during November-May.
Around half of the humpback whale population migrates to Maui Nui Basin every year to breed. The Maui Nui Basin is just 40 miles or so off the coast of Lahaina. So what better way to see these gentle giants up close than to go on a whale watching tour with some of Maui’s best whale watching experts.
#7 Parasailing
One of my favorite family activities to do while in Maui is go parasailing. It’s so surreal how quiet and peaceful it is up in the air.
The best time to parasail is in the morning and early afternoon. Generally, Maui has great parasailing conditions all day, but the trade winds can pick up in the afternoon so I suggest going earlier to avoid your trip getting canceled.
The boats usually carry around 6-12 passengers, so your parasailing excursion is rather intimate and you could have the boat to yourselves if you have enough people in your party.
You also have the option to parasail as a single rider, tandem or triple. Tandems and triples usually get more airtime than single riders.
Important to Note** Children must be at least 5 years old to parasail OR to ride on the boat as an observer.

#8 Helicopter Tour
Although a much more expensive excursion (around $250 per person), if you have the extra cash to spend a helicopter tour of Maui is well worth it in my opinion.

#9 Learn to Surf
Have you always watched surfers in awe and had a longing to learn? Well, Maui is full of people who love to surf so why not take some lessons!?
I would recommend Maui Wave Riders for surf lessons as they have convenient locations in Lahaina and Kihei. The instructors are patient and a lot of fun.
Maui Wave Riders offers semi-private and private lessons. The private lessons would probably be better for those families with younger children. Semi-private includes a party of 2-12 people and costs $95.00 per person. Private lessons are $150.00.

#10 Snorkel Molokini Crater
The Molokini Crater is a partially submerged volcanic crater located approximately 3 miles off the coast of Maui. Home to incredible coral reefs, marine life and clear blue water, this is a snorkelers paradise and a great, unique activity for families while visiting Maui.
One of the best tour options is through Four Winds II. It doesn’t matter if you are a beginner or an experienced snorkeler, all ages and skill levels will love this. The tour is 5 hours long and begins at 7:30am.
Breakfast and lunch is served on the boat and you can snorkel, relax and dine at your leisure.
They offer different tour options, including a Molokini snorkel and whale watching tour in the winter months when the humpback whales are in Maui.

#11 See the Lahaina Banyan Tree
If you decide not to take the Road to Hana and hike the Pipiwai Trail in Haleakala National Park, don’t worry you will still have an opportunity to see one of the banyan trees.
In fact, the oldest banyan tree in Hawaii is located in Banyan Tree Park in Lahaina on the corner of Front St and Canal St. These massive beauties offer the widest canopy coverage on Earth and they cover the most area of any other tree, too.
#12 Try Some Hawaiian Food
There are 3 foods that you absolutely must try before leaving Maui.
The first is a loco moco. Traditionally, a loco moco is white rice topped with hamburger, fried egg and brown gravy. The ultimate comfort food!
Next, you must try the malasadas. These are Portuguese doughnuts without the hole. What makes these different from a regular doughnut is the type of dough that is used. Try them and see for yourself!
And finally, Hawaiian shaved ice. Is this even a food? I’m not sure… but regardless, it’s delicious and I promise you that you can find it EVERYWHERE!
#13 Maui Ocean Center
Hands-down, the Maui Ocean Center is a MUST on your list of activities for your family to do in Maui.
This aquarium does an incredible job of focusing on conversation while maintaining stunning exhibits. Among the exhibits that you will see here is a 35 foot glass tunnel and open ocean display where you can watch sharks, stingrays and many species of fish swim all around you.
They also have exhibits with turtles, many different types of corals, the history of Hawaiian culture as well as a large variety of animals that are representative of all Hawaiian islands.
Probably the coolest of all displays, however, is the 3D Humpback whale show in the aquarium’s theater. You will feel as if you are swimming with the whales themselves. The entire family will love this. Unfortunately, the Maui Ocean Center does not recommend children under the age of 3 enter the theater because of the noise level.
The Maui Ocean Center also has two restaurants on site. The Seascape Restaurant has an island inspired menu with incredible views of the Ma’alaea Bay. If you are looking for more of a quick lunch, check out the Reef Cafe instead.
You will surely leave with a deep connection to the Hawaiian islands and culture. Seriously, you can’t miss this stop.

#14 Hawaii Mermaid Adventures
Do you have a daughter who is fascinated by mermaids? This unique adventure is sure to leave your little girl(s) in awe.

#15 Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm
I know Maui is one big incredible backdrop for your Instagram photos. But if you want a place that’s really different and unique check out the Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm.
This mystical, relaxing lavender farm is hidden in the mountain of Haleakala and provides the ultimate sense of rejuvenation and relaxation. Here you can explore fields of over 55,000 lavender plants and over 20 different varieties.
They hold events throughout the year, so check their website for details.

#16 Zipline Through the Jungle
The ultimate adventure for your whole family is to take a zipline tour with Jungle Zipline Maui.
They have two different tours that you can choose from. One with 5 lines and the other with 8 – each getting longer and faster. The 5 line tour option is great for families with smaller children.
They also provide water and snacks during and after the tour.

Know Before You Go
The minimum age to zipline is 6 years old and you must be between 50-250 pounds.
Get there early to get fitted for your gear.
You need to wear closed toe shoes and pants or long shorts.

#17 Set Sail on a Hawaiian Outrigger Canoe
This is a sailing experience like no other. I guarantee you will feel like Moana!
This unique tour with Maui Sailing Canoe will allow you to set sail along the gorgeous Wailea coast aboard a Hawaiian outrigger canoe. The tour includes snorkeling with sea turtles, whale watching (if in season) and a wealth of information about Hawaiian culture and history.

Best Places to Stay in Maui with Kids
Being an incredibly family-friendly island there are many resorts and hotels that cater to families.
Typically, families tend to gravitate towards the Wailea and Kaanapali/Lahaina regions due to the close proximity to restaurants, shopping, activities, swimmable beaches and beginner snorkeling options.
During our visit to Maui, we stayed at the following resorts and absolutely loved them all.
Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa
This resort will be a dream for your kids. They have 6 pools, a 50 foot water slide, a bridge, a mermaid encounter, stargazing at night and even penguins on-site! The dining is incredible and they even have a swim-up bar for the adults!
You probably thought that I forgot about a luau on my list of activities for families in Maui above. But I was saving it for right here!! Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa puts on an incredible luau called Drums of the Pacific. It’s an event the whole family is sure to love. Be sure to get tickets in advance.

Grand Wailea
This resort is absolutely going to have you never wanting to leave. There are 4 pools, 5 water slides, a Tarzan pool with a rope swing, 3 hot tubs, caves, 6 waterfalls and much much more. You can easily spend your Maui vacation right here and be totally happy!
They have a ‘Grand Passport’ that each child will receive upon check in. This will have a map and a list of all educational activities for children to visit on property. For each one they visit they will receive a passport “stamp”.
